Who is responsible

Offing is an app developed by Luis Carvajal. For anything to do with this policy: offing@carvajal.io.

What is kept on your phone

Everything the app creates lives in your iPhone’s local storage and we have no access to it:

• Passages: the track (positions with their time, course and speed), miles, duration and the name of the trip.
• Log entries you write aboard, with the time and position at which you wrote them.
• Photos you add to a passage, from the camera or your photo library.
• Downloaded chart areas for use with no signal.
• A battery-usage log, so the app can be tuned. It can be cleared from within the app.

Delete a passage and it is gone. Delete the app and everything goes with it.

Your position

Offing uses GPS to draw your boat on the chart, work out course and speed, and record the track of the passage. That track is not sent anywhere: it is written to your phone as it arrives.

The “Always” location permission is what lets the passage keep recording with the phone locked in your pocket. Without it the track stops when the screen goes off. You can change it whenever you like in Settings → Offing → Location.

What leaves the phone, and where it goes

Drawing the chart and giving you information about the sea takes a few requests over the internet. This is exactly what is sent in each case:

Seagrass and marine reserves	The coordinates of the point you tapped on the chart.	IDEIB, of the Govern de les Illes Balears.
Gale warnings	The sea area, not your position.	Meteoalarm, IPMA and AEMET.

These requests are made only when you tap a point on the chart or ask for the forecast. Nothing is sent in the background or while you are sailing. If you have the area downloaded and are out of signal, the chart works just the same and nothing is sent at all.

None of those requests carries your name, your email, or any identifier of your phone. As with any web request, the destination server may record your IP address in its own technical logs.

Apple Watch and health data

If you use the Apple Watch app, Offing opens a sailing workout in the Health app. That is what keeps the watch screen awake while you sail.

Offing asks permission only to write that workout. It reads no health data at all: not heart rate, not activity, nothing. And none of it is sent off your device.

What we do not do

• No accounts and no passwords: we do not even ask for your email.
• No analytics or usage-measurement tools.
• No advertising and no third-party trackers.
• We do not sell or share data with anyone, because we do not hold any.
• Your track, your photos and your entries are never uploaded to any server.

Children

Offing is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

If Offing ever adds something that changes the above — keeping a copy of your passages in the cloud, say — this page will be updated before that feature reaches the app, and the change will be announced inside the app itself. The date at the top says when it was last touched.

Your rights

Since the data is on your device and not on our servers, access, correction and deletion are things you do yourself from within the app. If you still want to exercise any right under the GDPR, or ask anything at all, write to offing@carvajal.io.
